General Information
Grown since very ancient times.
From its wild species (lactuca virosa), native of the
Mediterranean regions, many varieties hav been obtained which are
capable of growing all year long.
Its leaf has a high fiber
content, popular wisdom attributes properties for healing anemia
and general weakness; it is also a diuretic, favors sleep
(recommended to people who suffer insomnia) and even for treating
minor bronchitis.
Among its most important
nutrients are: vitamin A (protects from lung and intestinal
cancer) and potassium. Lettuces are a moderate source of
antioxidants (vitamin C), copper, iron and calcium. Thier high
contents of water and its diuretic properties make it suitable for
weigh-losing diets.
